Can caffeine cross the skin?

Yes. Caffeine has been detected in blood after certain formulations were applied to human skin. It is one of the clearest examples of skin research, and a good place to start if you are curious about how wearable formats work.

What the research tested

Otberg and colleagues’ 2008 study tested six healthy men aged 26–39. A 2.5% caffeine solution in ethanol and propylene glycol was applied to chest skin, with hair follicles open and, separately, blocked. Caffeine appeared in blood after five minutes with follicles open and twenty minutes with them blocked.

The study used a liquid solution and measured blood caffeine: a precise question, answered with a precise method. It also showed hair follicles offering the faster route. Read the original study, published online in December 2007 and in the April 2008 journal issue.

Why the formulation matters

“Contains caffeine” names an ingredient. The formulation around it shapes how a product behaves: the material holding the ingredient, its concentration, the area of skin it covers and the way the product is worn.
