What does a product certificate tell you?

How to read specifications, laboratory reports and certification without asking one document to prove more than it tested.
By 24/sync Published Editorial review 3 min read

Bu rehber şu anda İngilizce olarak sunulmaktadır.

A certificate is most useful when you know what it covers. It may document a material, report test results for a batch or confirm that an organisation meets a particular standard. Each type answers a specific question, clearly and on the record.

Start with the type of document

A specification sets out characteristics or requirements. A test report records what was measured in a sample. A certificate of analysis commonly presents analytical results against stated criteria. Read the contents and you know exactly what the document covers.

In medicine quality guidance, ICH Q6A describes specifications through tests, analytical procedures and acceptance criteria. It is a good model of what a well-defined scope looks like. Read the ICH Q6A guidance published by the FDA.

Check that it belongs to the product

A report on a raw ingredient tells you about that ingredient. A report on a finished product tells you about the product. Both are useful, and a good document makes clear which one you are reading, and for which version.

Look for a clear product or sample identity, a batch or lot reference where applicable, a date and an identified issuer. Then read the result and its unit. Those details are what make a document worth trusting.

Read the test, not just the word “passed”

“Passed” means the most when the criterion sits beside it. A result for ingredient content confirms content. A result for a named contaminant confirms that contaminant was checked.

A focused report is a strong one: specific, measurable and clear. Good documentation shows you exactly which question it answers.

Certification and accreditation are different

Certification assesses conformity with a particular standard or scheme. Accreditation assesses an organisation’s competence and impartiality for defined activities. UKAS, the UK accreditation body, explains that accreditation is specific to its scope: it covers the defined activities a laboratory has been assessed for. Read the UKAS explanation.

For independent testing, the strongest picture shows who carried out the work, what they tested and the report itself. A badge is the starting point; the report is the detail.

Five useful questions

  • Does this document name the product or material I am asking about?
  • Does it relate to the current formulation or relevant batch?
  • Which measurements were actually made?
  • Who issued it, and what was their role?
  • Does the claimed benefit match what the document tested?

At 24/sync, every ingredient and amount is on the label, down to the milligram. Our Science & standards page sets out the composition behind each patch and the research on its ingredients.

For the science of testing patches themselves, read how patches are tested.

The product-specific question

What does this mean for 24/sync?

Read our current evidence register to distinguish composition information, wider research and what remains unverified for our finished patches.
