Botanical extracts: why the details matter

Species, plant part, extraction and standardisation help explain why two products with the same plant name may be different.

Esta guía está disponible actualmente en inglés.

A botanical extract is a preparation made from a plant or plant part. The common name is only the start of the story. Species, plant part and preparation shape what the extract contains. Know those details and you can read a label, compare products and see exactly how a study relates to the formulation in front of you.

Four details worth looking for

Species. A botanical name identifies the plant more precisely than a familiar everyday name. It keeps different plants from being grouped under one label.

Plant part. A root, leaf, seed or flower is a specific starting material. Each part has its own profile, which is why a good label names it.

Preparation. An extract is made using a liquid to draw selected constituents from plant material. That liquid may then be removed to produce a dry extract. The result is a concentrated preparation, a different thing from simply weighing dried plant powder.

Standardisation. A manufacturer may measure selected chemical markers so that every batch is consistent. It is a mark of care in how an extract is made. The NIH botanical guide explains these terms.

A real example of why preparation matters

A 2007 study in adults with sleep difficulties tested a named oral valerian-and-hops combination over four weeks, specifying the plant extracts, extraction conditions and ratio of starting material to extract. The combination reduced the time taken to fall asleep compared with placebo. A named preparation, a defined ratio, a measured result: that is what detail looks like. Read the original trial.

Our sleep botanicals guide explores that example in context.

What an extract ratio tells you

An extract ratio describes the relationship between the starting plant material and the finished extract. It is a preparation detail, and a useful one: it shows the extract has been specified with care.

When two products present different kinds of figures, ask what each number measures, then compare like with like. A well-defined specification is worth more than a large number without context.

Botanicals in a patch

A botanical extract brings a mixture of plant constituents. In a 24/sync patch, it is built into the adhesive layer that sits against your skin, designed to release steadily across the hours you wear it. Nothing to swallow, nothing to brew.

The research on each plant is the background. The label is the detail: every ingredient and amount, down to the milligram.

Make the information useful to you

If there is an ingredient you avoid, or a preparation you have reacted to before, check the full ingredient list before choosing. Bring the full product information to a pharmacist or clinician when checking suitability alongside medicines. Then pick the patch that fits your day. Our ingredient-list guide and Science & standards take you further.

A clear standard

Our guides distinguish ingredient research from evidence for our finished patches. Read our evidence approach.
