How do ingredient patches work?

A patch holds a formulation against your skin. In a 24/sync patch, the actives are built into the adhesive layer itself, so the part that touches your skin is the part that carries the ingredients. It is designed to release them steadily across the wear time, not in one hit.
Here is how that works, from the science of skin to the patch in your pocket.
Skin is a selective barrier
Your skin does much more than provide a surface for a patch. Its outer layer, the stratum corneum, is a selective barrier between your body and the outside world.
A 24/sync patch is passive: no powered device, no needles. The foundational analysis by Potts and Guy, published in 1992, examined how a molecule’s size and its affinity for water and fats relate to skin permeability, a model that remains useful for formulation research.
The formulation matters as much as the ingredient name
The formulation is where the craft is. The surrounding materials, contact with the skin and conditions of wear all shape how a patch performs. Medicinal patches are developed as complete systems for the same reason: the FDA’s transdermal research programme addresses delivery, adhesion, irritation and the effects of heat as distinct performance questions.
That is why, in a 24/sync patch, the adhesive layer is part of the formula, not just the glue.
Five steps, from pouch to skin
- Built in: the actives sit in the adhesive layer, the part that touches your skin.
- Applied: peel away the liner and press the clear patch into place.
- Steady release: designed to release steadily across the wear time.
- Nothing through the gut: nothing to swallow, mix or brew.
- Fresh each time: peel it off when the wear time on your pack is up. Thirty patches per pouch.
Every ingredient and amount is on the label, down to the milligram. Our guide to what the amount on a patch label means explains how to read it.
What research can show
Studies of microneedles, creams and other assisted methods look at different technologies. A 24/sync patch keeps it simple: no needles, no device, nothing to rub in.
What this means for choosing 24/sync
The appeal of the format is tangible: a clear, wearable step with nothing to swallow, mix or brew. No pill, no can, no powder. Made in the UK, with every ingredient on the label.
Everyone’s different. Give it a couple of weeks of daily wear and notice how your days feel. Science & standards sets out the ingredients and the research behind them.
