Ginseng and Siberian ginseng: names worth distinguishing

Similar common names, two different plants. Here is how to tell Asian ginseng and Siberian ginseng apart on a label, and how to read the research on each.

Ginseng and Siberian ginseng are two different plants. Asian ginseng belongs to the Panax genus; Siberian ginseng usually refers to Eleutherococcus senticosus, also called eleuthero. On a product label or in a research headline, the botanical name is the first detail to check.

Asian ginseng: more than a single preparation

Asian ginseng is Panax ginseng. “Red” and “white” ginseng describe different ways of preparing it. Its constituents include ginsenosides, a group often measured in research and extract specifications. Preparation matters as much as species. The NCCIH Asian ginseng guide explains these distinctions.

For a label reader, “ginseng extract” is a starting point. The species, the plant part and the way the extract was prepared complete the picture.

Siberian ginseng: a different plant

The European Medicines Agency identifies eleutherococcus root as Eleutherococcus senticosus, and its assessment covers specified herbal preparations of it. Despite the shared common name, it is a plant in its own right, separate from Panax ginseng. Read the EMA ingredient record.

So each plant has its own research history. Read a study of Asian ginseng as a study of Asian ginseng, and a study of eleuthero as exactly that. Each one stands on its own.

Reading the research

Asian ginseng has a broad research history, and NCCIH brings it together in one guide. Findings are tied to a specific preparation and a specific outcome, so the most useful way to read them is precisely: which preparation, which outcome, which result.

That precision is what turns a familiar name into useful information. The more exactly a product names its ingredients, the easier it is to read.

A short comparison checklist

  • Check the botanical name, rather than relying on the common name alone.
  • Look for the plant part and extract specification.
  • Identify the route used in the study: swallowed, applied to skin or another method.
  • Check whether the measured outcome is the one you actually care about.

Use these details to compare the actual preparations and the research relevant to your needs.

Reading the 24/sync range

Some 24/sync products list ginseng, and Drive lists Siberian ginseng separately, each under its own name. Drive is built for everyday drive and stamina, in a clear patch with every ingredient and amount on the label, down to the milligram.

Check suitability as well as identity, particularly alongside medicines: NCCIH notes potential interactions, so speak to a healthcare professional or pharmacist if you take any. Read botanical extracts explained for how extracts are made and Science & standards for our approach to ingredients and evidence.

A clear standard
