B vitamins: forms, amounts and the finished product

What B3, B5 and B6 names mean, why the chemical form matters, and how to read a vitamin listed in a patch.
By 24/sync Published Editorial review 2 min read

Esta guía está disponible actualmente en inglés.

B vitamins are part of normal human nutrition, and each one has its own job in the body. On a label, the vitamin name is the start of the story. The chemical form tells you the rest. Here is how to read B3, B5 and B6 with confidence.

Vitamin B3 is also called niacin. The term covers nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and related derivatives, including nicotinamide riboside. These are related but distinct substances, each with its own name. The body uses niacin in the production of important coenzymes, including NAD. NIH: niacin.

Nicotinamide riboside and NAD+ are close relatives with different names: the first is a form of B3, the second is one of the coenzymes the body makes from niacin. If the exact form matters to you, ask the brand. The detail is worth having.

B5: pantothenic acid

Vitamin B5 is known as pantothenic acid. The body uses it to make coenzyme A, which takes part in many metabolic processes. NIH: pantothenic acid.

B6: more than one chemical identity

Vitamin B6 includes several related compounds, including pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine, with corresponding phosphate forms. Its coenzyme forms take part in many enzyme reactions. The full name tells you exactly which one you are looking at. NIH: vitamin B6.

What the amount on the label tells you

On a 24/sync label, every amount is what goes into each patch, down to the milligram. It is a clear composition figure you can check against the ingredient list.

When you compare a patch with a capsule, line up the form and the basis as well as the number: per patch, per capsule or per serving. Two identical figures on two packs can describe different forms or different formats. See our guide to the amounts on a patch label for the questions that make a comparison clear.

Choose around your routine

If a wearable routine appeals, start with the format and the current product information. Energy brings B3, B5 and B6 together with caffeine in a clear patch, built for alert, steady days and the afternoon dip. Nothing to swallow, mix or brew, and every ingredient is on the label.

If you have been advised to take a particular supplement, keep to that plan and speak to a healthcare professional before changing anything. For our approach to ingredients and evidence, visit Science & standards.
