NR and NAD+: what is the difference?

A straightforward guide to two often-confused names, what an oral NR study measured and how to read longevity claims with confidence.

Nicotinamide riboside, usually shortened to NR, and NAD+ are different molecules. NR is a precursor: the body can use it in pathways that produce NAD+. Know which is which, and any longevity label becomes easier to read.

Two names, different roles

NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It is involved in cellular metabolism. NR is one of the compounds researchers investigate as a way to influence NAD+ metabolism. That relationship is why NR draws so much interest.

What one human trial found

In a randomised, placebo-controlled crossover trial published on 29 March 2018, Martens and colleagues tested swallowed nicotinamide riboside chloride capsules: 500 mg twice daily for six weeks, compared with six weeks of placebo. Twenty-four healthy adults aged 55–79 completed the trial. NAD+ measurements in a subset showed an increase in certain blood cells after NR.

A controlled human trial, a clear result: NAD+ went up in the blood cells measured. Read the original NR trial.

What a biomarker tells you

A biomarker is a measurement used to study a biological process, here NAD+ in blood cells. It gives researchers a clear, measurable signal to follow.

When reading a study, find its endpoint: a molecule in a blood sample, a change in a physical test, what participants reported, or health over time. Each tells you something specific, and the best summaries say exactly which one was measured.

Route and amount belong together

A capsule and a patch are different routes, each with its own formulation. The trial above used swallowed capsules. A 24/sync patch keeps its actives in the adhesive layer against your skin, designed to release them steadily across the hours you wear it.

When comparing products, put three details side by side: the exact chemical form, how it is taken and the amount. On a 24/sync label, the amount is the amount in the patch, listed down to the milligram.

What this means when choosing a product

Start with what you want from your routine. If that is a simple daily step for the long game, with nothing to swallow, a patch fits. Read the application and use information, wear it daily for a couple of weeks and notice how your days feel.

At 24/sync, our ingredient research links are there so you can read the science for yourself. Our Science & standards page gathers it in one place, and how patches are tested covers the patch side.

A clear standard
