How to read a patch ingredient list

A considered choice starts with the details: ingredient identity, chemical form, supporting materials and what a stated amount means.
By 24/sync Published Editorial review 3 min read

An ingredient list tells you what a formulation contains. Read it in three layers: the precise name of each ingredient, what each stated amount measures and the materials that hold it all together. With those details, comparing products is quick and clear.

Start with the precise name

Some familiar names describe a family of substances. Vitamin B3, for example, includes different forms; “ginseng” can be used for plants with different botanical identities. A more detailed name gives you a clearer starting point for reading research or checking suitability. The NIH explains these distinctions in its niacin fact sheet and Asian ginseng guide.

If a label gives only the broad name, ask the brand for the specification of the product you are considering. A scientific name earns its place when it identifies the material precisely.

Read the unit and its meaning

A milligram and a microgram are different units: 1 milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. The number also needs a clear basis. Is it per patch, per recommended use or for the whole pack? Compare like with like before comparing the size of two numbers.

On a 24/sync label, every amount is what goes into each patch, down to the milligram. Our guide to the amounts on a patch label explains the other terms you may see in patch research.

Separate ingredients from construction

A patch is also a physical object. Its film, adhesive and removable liner each have their own job alongside the ingredients named in the formulation. In a 24/sync patch, the actives are built into the adhesive layer that sits against your skin. If you are checking a known sensitivity or comparing complete compositions, ask for the full list of materials.

Ask a specific question, such as “What adhesive contacts my skin?” or “Is this the full formulation list?” This gives you a more useful answer than asking whether a product is “clean” or “free from chemicals”.

Read each study in its own setting

Ingredient research is worth reading closely. Check each study’s route, formulation and outcome: a capsule study tells you about that capsule, and a cream study tells you about that cream. Each finding belongs to its own setting.

For botanicals, also look for the species, plant part and extract details. The NIH's botanical guide explains why preparations carrying the same plant name can differ.

A useful check before choosing

Read the current product information alongside its use instructions and precautions. If something affects your decision and remains unclear, ask before buying. For 24/sync, Science & standards explains our approach to ingredients and evidence. Your patch guide is the next step when you want to understand the practical format.

A clear standard

The product-specific question

What does this mean for 24/sync?
